17 Jul Healthy cake – is it possible?
From avocado buttercream to beetroot sponge, our bakers are always mixing it up with weird and wonderful ingredients to create different textures and flavours, and of course to cater for those with particular dietary requirements.
With coconut flour, courgette and even charcoal featuring in the ingredients list you’ll find in your CakeDrop, you wouldn’t be alone in thinking these cakes have health-giving qualities. But we want to be completely honest with you… CAKE IS NOT A SUPERFOOD!
Sure, date syrup is marginally less sugary than normal sugar and may have held onto a few more nutrients during processing. But neither of these sweeteners are recommended health foods. The real benefit of using date syrup in our cakes is for its rich flavour and thick consistency which makes it great for baking (and of course, eating). Same goes with courgette (or zucchini, which sounds slightly more exotic!) which you’ll find in one of our popular bakes. Sure, it offers some vitamins and minerals (inevitably reduced during baking), however the real reason we love it so much is the moisture it adds, just like carrots do in carrot cake.
So, is healthy cake possible? I mean, you might be able to make a few ‘healthier’ substitutions here and there but the truth is: probably not. Most of the goodness of one ingredient is normally offset by the ‘naughtiness’ of another, if not completely lost during baking, and you’d have to eat a wholeeee lotta cake to gain any benefit. But that’s OK – cake is cake. It’s not supposed to be one of your 5-a-day and a cheeky slice shared with colleagues isn’t going to take away from the fact that you are a well-balanced individual who can enjoy a treat in the afternoon and still make it to Body Pump after work.
The fact is, ‘superfoods’ can never be a substitute for a generally healthy and balanced diet. And here at CakeDrop, we are ALL about balance. What we aren’t about is trickery, which is why you’ll never hear us trying to sell you a dream of nutritious cake. What you see is what you get and what you can count on is delicious, joy-inducing, soul-nourishing cake, freshly-baked by London’s best independent bakeries… which may or may not extend your life.
