The Lunar New Year - also known as Chinese New Year - celebrates the arrival of spring and the start of a new year. Unlike the Solar New Year, which occurs once the Earth has done one full orbit of the sun (365 days), the Lunar New Year is celebrated every twelve full cycles of the Moon (roughly 354 days). This year’s Lunar New Year falls on Saturday the 10th of February 2024, and this year it’s the year of the dragon!

Most notably, the Lunar New Year is the biggest celebration in China, but is also celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and any country that chooses to observe this cultural event. In the world of workplace culture, it’s important to acknowledge cultural celebrations from all over the globe. That’s why we’ve come up with some fun ideas so that you can celebrate this special occasion with your teams here in the UK.

Give your workspace a good tidy-up

The Lunar New Year is all about getting rid of the old and making space for the new. In fact, the word ‘dust’ in Chinese is a homophone for ‘old’, so giving your workspace a good wipe down is much more than a simple chore this time of year, it’s a symbolic practice. So, get rid of those old meeting notes, print-outs and snack wrappers, and start the next Lunar New Year off on the right foot.

Hold a lunch and learn session on the Lunar New Year

Often, the best and most respectful way to celebrate a cultural event is to learn more about it. Why don’t you hold a lunch and learn session for your teams that showcases the history and significance of this event and how it’s typically celebrated? Perhaps you could order in some Lunar New Year treats and even do a quiz at the end with fun prizes to win.
