Enjoy office cake safely during COVID-19

How can you enjoy office cake safely during COVID-19? While the communal fruit bowl and biscuit tin may be off-limits in the new socially-distanced workplace, that doesn’t mean offices can’t find safer ways to enjoy their favourite treats. After all, what would work be without those culture-nurturing moments over a slice of cake?

Shared food in the workplace is a hot topic at the moment. So, as we get back on our bikes this month in the name of office birthdays, work anniversaries and monthly cake days, here are our tips for enjoying socially-distanced cake sessions in the office.

Assign a cake warden

As job titles go, this is definitely one for the LinkedIn profile. Allocate one person in your office to be responsible for preparing and serving your CakeDrop. The cake warden should take note of the guidance from the Food Standards Agency on food handling, and ensure surfaces, kitchenware and their own hands are clean before and after preparing the cake. It’s worth noting that recommendations for face coverings and glove use in foodservice have not changed as a result of COVID-19, and food businesses are not required to use these by law. The most effective way to minimise risk is through increased hand and surface washing. Check out our guide for cutting cake properly.

No self-serving

Usually, when a cake appears in the office, a lot of suspicious hovering ensues within close range. However, colleagues will have to master the art of self-control and distance by waiting at their stations for their special delivery. Before delivering slices to co-workers around the office, the cake warden should store away any remaining cake to avoid tempting self-servers.

Good hygiene before, during and after eating

Naturally, employees should clean their hands and surfaces before and after tucking into their cake. Sharing cutlery or plates is a no-go. If you choose to use paper plates, ensure staff dispose of these swiftly and safely after use. Likewise, any reusable cutlery and crockery should be put straight into the dishwasher immediately once finished with. Oh, and for the love of god… don’t blow out candles on the cake.

Enjoy cake at a safe distance

We’re used to it now. Stand or sit “one metre plus” apart whilst devouring your CakeDrop. If you’re lucky enough to have an office with a roof terrace or outdoor space close by, try using that for your cake celebrations. And if you’re looking for an excuse not to have to sing happy birthday in chorus, we hereby give you permission to use ‘health and safety’ as an excuse. You are welcome!

Follow these tips to make sure you can enjoy office cake safely during COVID-19.

If you’re looking to welcome your team back with a mini office celebration, we’re offering an exclusive ‘back to the office’ deal with 50% off your first CakeDrop to the office.
